Longer distance travel - London

There are three ways by public transport to reach London - by train, by coach and by taking a local bus to a mainline railhead and then the train from there.

Let's say that you wanted to leave Melksham at a quarter to 8 in the morning - how would you fare?

On the 07:45 train, you would change at Swindon where you would have 10 minutes to change just across the Platform into the Paddington express which would get there to London at 09:20.

The 07:49 bus (route X71) takes you to Bath, where you would be in time to connect across the road and up the stairs with the London train, arriving there in London at 10:13.

A more direct bus via Chippenham (route 234) leaves at 08:05 and gets to Chippenham bus station at 08:45; it's quite a walk from there to the station and you would probably not make it in time for the 08:55 train ... so you wouldn't get away from Chippehnam until 09:25 with an arrival in London at 10:40.

The National Express coach runs direct from Melksham to London and leaves, once a day, at 07:45. I've tried to be kind to this service by choosing a start time for this survey that co-incides with when it runs ... but alas, it's much slower; you get to London at 11:15
