HTV News - 799/2316
Written by Nick Field on Monday, 11th December 2006

Although I've not seen it myself yet I've heard that something about the trans wilts service is being broadcast on the local news today so it may be worth watching one of the bulletins when you can.

Here's a link to a small online article:

Click on West, then news

I am hoping to get home in time to record it.  I have had a call from someone who has seen it already so it must have been broadcast on the lunchtime bulletin as well.

I managed to record it onto DVD and watched it later.  Looks like you had to dodge some shocking weather there Graham!  I am happy to download the program onto my PC and email or burn a copy if anyone would like to see it.

Nick, I have it on DVD now ... my son caught it and handed me a copy when he saw me, on the basis that he was sure I would want a copy and didn't have one ;-)

I am minded to call a "New Year, new look forward" get together one eveing in the new year - need to be careful not to compete with WWRUG or MRDG though - and we could have the DVD around as a very minor part of the events.  Also wondering whether to make the site / forum known and available to West Wilts to Bath / Bristol folks and looking at co-ordination of the issuess that everyone's having with the ex-Wessex services (trains operates by 143 / 150 / 153 / 158 units) from Cardiff / Bristol by First.  Probably worth another thread - but - thoughts??

A New Year get together would be a good idea.  While I get dismayed at some of the things that are happening on the railways I do find it very heartening when I meet fellow board members and others who share the same views on what we are trying to achieve.  It might also be a good idea to make the board made to the Bath and Bristol and West Wilts folks and perhaps have a thread or area where the current problems they are experiencing could be discussed and logged, otherwise it might all get forgotton about in a couple of months if they do desert the services!

Save the Train was the campaign to bring an approriate train service back to and through Melksham.

Most big contributors are still around writing at the Coffee shop forum where new members are very welcome.

The train has been saved - sort of - we have stepped back up from an unusable service to a poorish one but it's doing very well. We did that through setting up the TransWilts Community Rail Partnership. That fulfilled its early objectives; it has been taken over by local and regional government types who are now doing medium and long term work. The team from this forun can also be found at the Melksham Rail User Group (which was the Melksham Rail Development Group at the time these articles were written and we had no users.

We mustn't loose sight, though, that the train service remains poor and needs our community support in marketing and campaigning to keep it going in a positive direction ... and all the more so when we're expecting to find a different normallity once we get out of the Coronavirus Pandemic and head for zero carbon via the climate crisis. Yes, it's saved ... it's now a key community facility ... the need for enhancement and the strong and near-universal local support remain, and the rail industry and goverment remain slow to move and provide the enhancements even to level us up with other towns. Please support the Melksham Rail User Group - now very much in partnership rather than protest with the rail industry and local government, including GWR, TransWilts and unitary and town councils. And please use the trains and buses, and cycle and walk when you can.
