Please add YOUR support - 2009 - 7974/12901 Written by admin (Graham Ellis) on Sunday, 15th March 2009
Yesterday was the first full day of our new pledge campaign to ask for YOUR support for an appropriate service ... except that at this stage we wanted to get the first few signatures 'on the page' before we went public, and to have those who have supported such pledges in the past take a look at the new one and help us iron our any tiny things that needed correcting.
And even though we haven't posted on ANY publicly visible boards (until this post) we got over 50 signatures in the first complete 24 hour period, representing an astonishing ten thousand journeys in and through Wiltshire.
This year ...
* There are unitary elections which make the candidates for election to Wiltshire Council, one of who will become the new supremo in the local transport authority for public transport and tourism
* The County Council is looking at economic stimuluses to help businesses in the area - and what better way than a low cost improvement in public transport that's implementable in the very short term
* All the "donkey work" has already been done [last year], so a first timetable, train, etc, are available.
Please add or renew your name as a supporter.

Behind the scenes - some notes for interested parties ...
1. We are not looking to collect as many names as possible - we are looking to collect support from as many people as possible who are genuinely interested.

The current signature total is 515, which means that, only halfway through this year's pledge campaign, we have already surpassed the number of signatures we achieved last year. Many thanks again to you all.
Its not over by a long shot yet though, so please keep those pledges coming!

The figures that we have already are significant. 90% of respondents live in Wiltshire or nearby counties, and over 40% of them travel in or through Wiltshire on a daily basis, with most of the rest travelling weekly or from time to time. Between them they account for ...
203 x 500 + 99 x 150 + 142 x 50 + 55 x 20 .... that's over 120,000 single journeys per year

Save the Train was the campaign to bring an approriate train service back to and through Melksham.
Most big contributors are still around writing at the Coffee shop forum where new members are very welcome.
The train has been saved - sort of - we have stepped back up from an unusable service to a poorish one but it's doing very well. We did that through setting up the TransWilts Community Rail Partnership. That fulfilled its early objectives; it has been taken over by local and regional government types who are now doing medium and long term work. The team from this forun can also be found at the Melksham Rail User Group (which was the Melksham Rail Development Group at the time these articles were written and we had no users.
We mustn't loose sight, though, that the train service remains poor and needs our community support in marketing and campaigning to keep it going in a positive direction ... and all the more so when we're expecting to find a different normallity once we get out of the Coronavirus Pandemic and head for zero carbon via the climate crisis. Yes, it's saved ... it's now a key community facility ... the need for enhancement and the strong and near-universal local support remain, and the rail industry and goverment remain slow to move and provide the enhancements even to level us up with other towns. Please support the Melksham Rail User Group - now very much in partnership rather than protest with the rail industry and local government, including GWR, TransWilts and unitary and town councils. And please use the trains and buses, and cycle and walk when you can.
