Written by admin (Graham Ellis) on Saturday, 18th November 2006

On Friday, 8th December the last weekday passenger day time trains call at Melksham.

From Monday, 11th December it will no longer be possible to catch the 07:45 to Swindon, nor to arrive in Melksham at 09:02 off an 07:45 connection from London.

I've a customer travelling on the very last 17:02 departure from Melksham .... and I'm wondering whether to make some sort of event of it.  Get others to join, and take ans hand around litereature saying "last BUT" ... including cards for people to post to various peopel to ask for the service, or better alternative, to be restored.

Probably should involve the press too, don't you think?

I'm putting my last departing-by-17:02 customer on the train tonight and I'll join him for once - up to Swindon and back.  See you regulars for the last time before the bomb hits tomorrow night.

I'm intending to park up at Melksham and catch the 1702 to Swindon and Back.  See everyone there!
I've been using the trains quite a bit recently and they seem busier than ever.  The midday up to Swindon last Sunday for example was a three coach unit - at least 50 got off.  Only wish I had my camera with me to take a picture of the swarm of people on the platform!

Hi

I've been told that on the BBC news in Bristol this morning they announced that there is to be a demonstration outside First Great Western House this evening to complain about the new timetable.

I'm not normally a "demonstrator" but, gee, I wish I could be both at the demo and on the train.  Yet First are only one element in the jigsaw; arguably the demonstration shoulld be outside the DfT offices in London or ... well, I could name some more local (county) bodies with directors who seem train-unfriendly at times.

I'll also be on the 17.43 from Swindon, if they don't cancel it of course. If they don't I'm sure it will be the first time in a week they haven't for about the last six weeks.

Trains are falling like flies all over the place today, but I suspect the last rush hour "TransWilts" has a higher priority that the norm.  Somewhat like the time we got a 158 when we arranged a possy for the 05:52 (4th September)

Save the Train was the campaign to bring an approriate train service back to and through Melksham.

Most big contributors are still around writing at the Coffee shop forum where new members are very welcome.

The train has been saved - sort of - we have stepped back up from an unusable service to a poorish one but it's doing very well. We did that through setting up the TransWilts Community Rail Partnership. That fulfilled its early objectives; it has been taken over by local and regional government types who are now doing medium and long term work. The team from this forun can also be found at the Melksham Rail User Group (which was the Melksham Rail Development Group at the time these articles were written and we had no users.

We mustn't loose sight, though, that the train service remains poor and needs our community support in marketing and campaigning to keep it going in a positive direction ... and all the more so when we're expecting to find a different normallity once we get out of the Coronavirus Pandemic and head for zero carbon via the climate crisis. Yes, it's saved ... it's now a key community facility ... the need for enhancement and the strong and near-universal local support remain, and the rail industry and goverment remain slow to move and provide the enhancements even to level us up with other towns. Please support the Melksham Rail User Group - now very much in partnership rather than protest with the rail industry and local government, including GWR, TransWilts and unitary and town councils. And please use the trains and buses, and cycle and walk when you can.
