1702 & 1809 Trains Cancelled 24/10/2006 - 576/1712
Written by Lee on Tuesday, 24th October 2006

From the First Great Western Website :

16:47 Westbury to Swindon due 17:31

This train has been cancelled. This is due to a train fault.

17:43 Swindon to Southampton Central due 19:44

This train will be started from Westbury at 18:32. It will no longer call at: Swindon, Chippenham, Melksham and Trowbridge. This is due to a train fault.

I think that we would all agree that this is getting beyond a joke now.

It is my view that First are pursuing a deliberate policy of trying to get Melksham train commuters used to taking the bus (see link below.)

I agree and thought a while back that the service might deliberately be slowly run down prior to the timetable change

Clealy FGW are mystic as they always know that they will be able to repair the train (or find alternative stock) by the time it is due to head south from Westbury  :-\

Not again! For goodness sake FGW, get your act together over this service!

My train from Oldfield Park up to Bristol was delayed by practically an hour today- After 20 minutes of waiting and the information point telling me the delay was getting later, then finally not working at all, I just went home.

I have dropped the FGW manager responsible for services in the area a line and invited him to comment for publication - not on any individual day but on the last fortnight's dreadful record. I have also asked him to look forward and tell us what steps are being taken ....

I speculate - and it's no more than that - that trains are being returned to the leasing company, or that the Canton depot in Cardiff is performing less well (with the loss of 450 jobs just announced there, can you be surprised) so that  there's [working] stock shortages. And the first train to be cancelled ....

When the train starts southwards from Westbury, where does the stock come from? Is it a broken train being fixed, or is it a 153 that's broken off another service at the end of the peak hour, reducing a Portsmouth - Cardiff line train to 2 coaches, or a Weymouth line service to just one?

Chris Grayling (Epsom & Ewell): To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, how many trains were cancelled between October 2005 and October 2006, broken down by reason.

Surprise , surprise.

From the First Great Western Website :

16:47 Westbury to Swindon due 17:31

This train has been cancelled. This is due to an earlier train fault.

Road transport has been arranged between Westbury and Chippenham.

I would imagine that the 1809 will follow.

Also :

13:27 Southampton Central to Bristol Temple Meads due 15:30

This train has been cancelled. This is due to an earlier train fault.

Customers forward on the 14:27 Southampton to Bristol TM service

Chris Grayling: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many trains were cancelled between October 2005 and October 2006, broken down by reason.

Mr. Tom Harris: The number of franchised passenger trains reported as cancelled in the year to August 2006 was 73,830. This represents 1.4 per cent. of the services planned to run.

The Department does not hold data relating to the reasons for each cancellation, or data relating to non-franchised train services.

Save the Train was the campaign to bring an approriate train service back to and through Melksham.

Most big contributors are still around writing at the Coffee shop forum where new members are very welcome.

The train has been saved - sort of - we have stepped back up from an unusable service to a poorish one but it's doing very well. We did that through setting up the TransWilts Community Rail Partnership. That fulfilled its early objectives; it has been taken over by local and regional government types who are now doing medium and long term work. The team from this forun can also be found at the Melksham Rail User Group (which was the Melksham Rail Development Group at the time these articles were written and we had no users.

We mustn't loose sight, though, that the train service remains poor and needs our community support in marketing and campaigning to keep it going in a positive direction ... and all the more so when we're expecting to find a different normallity once we get out of the Coronavirus Pandemic and head for zero carbon via the climate crisis. Yes, it's saved ... it's now a key community facility ... the need for enhancement and the strong and near-universal local support remain, and the rail industry and goverment remain slow to move and provide the enhancements even to level us up with other towns. Please support the Melksham Rail User Group - now very much in partnership rather than protest with the rail industry and local government, including GWR, TransWilts and unitary and town councils. And please use the trains and buses, and cycle and walk when you can.
