Westbury MP Calls For FGW To Be Stripped Of Franchise - 5637/9938 Written by Lee on Thursday, 7th February 2008
Quote from Westbury MP Andrew Murrison (link below) : http://thisisbath.co.uk/displayNode.jsp?nodeId=163490&command=displayContent&sourceNode=163316&contentPK=19795551&folderPk=89126&pNodeId=163047
He said he was "appalled" by the deterioration in FGW's service, and that it was time to take the franchise away from the firm.
"FGW has been given plenty of time to improve but my constituents are still suffering from a third-rate train service.
"I think the time has come for ministers who are responsible for the contract to consider pulling the plug."
He will meet FGW chief executive Andrew Haines at a meeting of the West Wilts Rail Users' Group in Trowbridge next Thursday, and again in London on Tuesday, February 19.
Do you know if that will be an 'open' meeting with WWRUG, as a Trowbridge resident I would be interested in attending if at all possible.
I take it that Thursday 14th and not today.

I must admit that I was surprised when I read that. The next advertised WWRUG meeting is on 28 February 2008 (link below.) http://www.wwrug.org.uk/publiemmeting28feb2008.htm
Perhaps Sion (who is on the WWRUG committee) or another forum member/reader can answer this?

I wondered about that, but the 28th is in Bradford and the article mentions a meeting in Trowbridge. ???
Anyone know exact details.

The WWRUG meeting on the 28th is being described as :
Those who want to protest against train services are being invited to attend a meeting of the West Wiltshire Rail Users Group at the Riverside Inn, Bradford on Avon, on February 28 at 7.15pm.
Save the Train was the campaign to bring an approriate train service back to and through Melksham.
Most big contributors are still around writing at the Coffee shop forum where new members are very welcome.
The train has been saved - sort of - we have stepped back up from an unusable service to a poorish one but it's doing very well. We did that through setting up the TransWilts Community Rail Partnership. That fulfilled its early objectives; it has been taken over by local and regional government types who are now doing medium and long term work. The team from this forun can also be found at the Melksham Rail User Group (which was the Melksham Rail Development Group at the time these articles were written and we had no users.
We mustn't loose sight, though, that the train service remains poor and needs our community support in marketing and campaigning to keep it going in a positive direction ... and all the more so when we're expecting to find a different normallity once we get out of the Coronavirus Pandemic and head for zero carbon via the climate crisis. Yes, it's saved ... it's now a key community facility ... the need for enhancement and the strong and near-universal local support remain, and the rail industry and goverment remain slow to move and provide the enhancements even to level us up with other towns. Please support the Melksham Rail User Group - now very much in partnership rather than protest with the rail industry and local government, including GWR, TransWilts and unitary and town councils. And please use the trains and buses, and cycle and walk when you can.
