Re-opening of old lines? Can it be true? - 5500/9762
Written by courgettelawn on Wednesday, 30th January 2008

Have I just imagined it or did I hear Ruth Kelly on the radio contemplating bringing back old railway lines back into use to ease capacity problems on busy lines (she cited London-Birmingham).

Is a slight change in political will being detected or a red herring?

Red herring probably. Too knackered after getting back from gallivanting around FGW land all day to give a more inciteful answer.

On the plus side, I got some interesting pics....

Kelly & Co released their "long-awaited" rolling stock plan today. See link below.

Fom Ruth Keyy's Appendix B, which shows a total of exactly 1300 extra vehicles, split electric and diesel. FGW gets no electtic and 52 diesel, and the commentary is:

9. First Great Western would introduce additional class 150 DMU vehicles for regional services around Bristol cascaded from London Midland, as well as new DMU vehicles for London suburban services. Furthermore, the possibility of lengthening some existing HST sets to increase capacity on the Thames Valley route into Paddington is being investigated.

Lee I am sure you posted a newspaper article recently in which she didnt rule out the possibility of re opening the Grand Central to provide additional capacity London to Birmingham?

Red herring probably.

Indeed, Lee. There is a massive difference between 'not ruling anything out' and actively pursuing the steps required to get something up-and-running.

Indeed I did (link below.)

However, the DfT have ruled out re-openings until 2014, and their overall policy appears to be one of scepticism towards schemes like the one you mention.

Save the Train was the campaign to bring an approriate train service back to and through Melksham.

Most big contributors are still around writing at the Coffee shop forum where new members are very welcome.

The train has been saved - sort of - we have stepped back up from an unusable service to a poorish one but it's doing very well. We did that through setting up the TransWilts Community Rail Partnership. That fulfilled its early objectives; it has been taken over by local and regional government types who are now doing medium and long term work. The team from this forun can also be found at the Melksham Rail User Group (which was the Melksham Rail Development Group at the time these articles were written and we had no users.

We mustn't loose sight, though, that the train service remains poor and needs our community support in marketing and campaigning to keep it going in a positive direction ... and all the more so when we're expecting to find a different normallity once we get out of the Coronavirus Pandemic and head for zero carbon via the climate crisis. Yes, it's saved ... it's now a key community facility ... the need for enhancement and the strong and near-universal local support remain, and the rail industry and goverment remain slow to move and provide the enhancements even to level us up with other towns. Please support the Melksham Rail User Group - now very much in partnership rather than protest with the rail industry and local government, including GWR, TransWilts and unitary and town councils. And please use the trains and buses, and cycle and walk when you can.
