London Paddington to Oxford Route - 2187/5103 Written by beagle03 on Saturday, 5th May 2007
Hi, New here so go easy on me!
I'm going to Hanborough on 25th May 2007 (booked on the 15.51 to be precise) from Paddington. I just wanted to know a little fact as this route is new to me.
The timetable says all services to Oxford earlier in the day are Adelante hauled (except this one)? So do they use HST's or FGWL stock or what? Can anyone help me here?
Thanks

Hi there, welcome!
The timetable states that this service should be operated by a HST. However, as from personal experience, trains between London and Worcester are almost always operated by Adelantes - because of complaints of on-board engine noise elsewhere where they were used. But the timetable states a HST, so I would go with that. You'll have to post back to see if it actually was an HST!
One other thing - your train, the 1551 from Paddington to Worcester Shrub Hill does NOT call at Hanborough - only at Paddington, Slough, Reading, Didcot Parkway, Oxford, then Charlbury, Kingham, Moreton-in-Marsh, Evesham, Pershore and Worcester Shrub Hill. Is this a mistake on the national rail enquiries system or on the new timetable? (Thought I might let you know now before the journey than you find out on the day!) Or, are you changing at Oxford and then catching the 1727 from Oxford to Great Malvern, which calls at Hanborough? (Operated by FGWL link stock apparently)

Thanks, that was the confusing bit.
I know the train does not call at Hanborough (to get the cheapest fare I have to change at Oxford). I was just looking to see about going first class (I can't stand first class on the adelante's, much prefer the HST's).
I think I remember reading somewhere that once a day a fill in HST was used on the route (I'll just have to see).
Will let you know the result
Thanks!

All spam removed as of 1830 Sunday - must of been a dozen posts!

Spammers - thanks Nick and Beagle.
A policy decision - I wanted to make it as easy as possible for genuine first time newcomers to be able to post without having to jump through hoops, and that means accepting and clearing out some level of spam.
With increasing spam, I have been researching ways and means to reduce the amount we get. Some technologies look good, but then the spammers are use to them and program around them (a game of cat and mouse - not sure who is the cat) but other ideas I have , though technically less clever, will mean that I can put in a unique trap that they've never seen before.
At present, I'm actually reading the spams (!) and analysing them. Yes, fellow moderators, please do keep deleting them as I get plenty in when I'm around. I'll then know their footprint and be able to "do" something - probably in a week or so's time.

Got in touch with someone I know at FGW and he says that 3 services a day each way are operated by HST's on the Cotswold route - and the one I'm booked on is usually an HST pulled service.
Thanks for the help

oh and thats why the trains don't stop at Hanborough - too short for HST's I guess

The 1551 Paddington to Worcester service used to be an Adelante but changed to an HST last December due to the very high loadings on the service between London and Oxford. It cannot stop Hanborough (yet) as unrefurbished HST's do not have selective door opening (SDO) and the platform can only accommodate a three-coach train - Adelante's can call as they have SDO.
The 1727 Oxford to Great Malvern service (normally departiing from platform 3) is worked by a two-car Turbo DMU (165) and stops at the smallest halts on the North Cotswold Line (where typically there are less than 2 people per day at each station!).
Incidentally, the other 2+8 HST worked trains are the 0544 & 0643 Hereford to Paddington, and the return journeys at 1722 and 1822 from Paddington.

Thanks for confirming that GWR and James - I can't stand the Adelante's and had the choice between two services (luckily I chose the HST pulled one - changing at Oxford).

If you want a seat to enioy the HST then I would advise getting a free seat reservation before you travel. It is not uncommon for people to stand all the way from London to Oxford on the 1551.

got a reservation (i'm travelling first class anyway - so i'd expect my money back if I had to stand)

Save the Train was the campaign to bring an approriate train service back to and through Melksham.
Most big contributors are still around writing at the Coffee shop forum where new members are very welcome.
The train has been saved - sort of - we have stepped back up from an unusable service to a poorish one but it's doing very well. We did that through setting up the TransWilts Community Rail Partnership. That fulfilled its early objectives; it has been taken over by local and regional government types who are now doing medium and long term work. The team from this forun can also be found at the Melksham Rail User Group (which was the Melksham Rail Development Group at the time these articles were written and we had no users.
We mustn't loose sight, though, that the train service remains poor and needs our community support in marketing and campaigning to keep it going in a positive direction ... and all the more so when we're expecting to find a different normallity once we get out of the Coronavirus Pandemic and head for zero carbon via the climate crisis. Yes, it's saved ... it's now a key community facility ... the need for enhancement and the strong and near-universal local support remain, and the rail industry and goverment remain slow to move and provide the enhancements even to level us up with other towns. Please support the Melksham Rail User Group - now very much in partnership rather than protest with the rail industry and local government, including GWR, TransWilts and unitary and town councils. And please use the trains and buses, and cycle and walk when you can.
