0710 Bristol Temple Meads to Paddington - 1501/4074
Written by Steve Bray on Monday, 26th February 2007

I see that this service has been cancelled this morning.

It was also cancelled last Thursday, and I've seen it cancelled previously.

Any reason why this train is cancelled so much?

I don't know, Steve, but it seems to be the first HST to be cancelled in the event of any problems.  It was almost as bad as the TransWilts service at the turn of the year.

This is the train that starts at Temple Meads then goes Parkway, Swindon, isn't it?  The one (only one?) that misses Bath and Chippenham.  Perhaps there's a clue in that?

Again this morning:

"The 0710 Bristol Temple Meads to London Paddington has been cancelled. Customers are advised to travel on the 0730 service, customers travelling from Bristol Parkway are advised to travel on the 0731 departure. This is due to a train fault."

Graham, you beat me to it.

Yesterday, it was also cancelled due to a "fault". I didn't access the internet on Tuesday to see if it ran or not. The frequency of its cancellation is a bit fishy to me.

I don't think it's a co-incidence. Could it be
a) The first train to cancel if they're a set short or
b) Intentional cancellation as it's a service they really don't want to have to operate.

I am NOT suggesting that "b" is the reason / motive.  Were you  :-\

I suspect a) is correct.

It is a cancellation that, overall will cause less hassle. Anyone who attempts to catch it has alternative services at 0700 and 0730; passengers who board at Parkway and beyond have a service 10 minutes later. There never seems to be a return working that is cancelled.

If is cancelled because other sets have faults, then it proves again, how close FGW are sailing to the wind. Seeing as everything FGW does (like re-vinyling units) is done because it is "part of the franchise agreement", then, by regularly cancelling this service, they are presumably in breach of their franchise agreement.

Do you want a 50p bet that it will be cancelled tomorrow?!

The TRUE answer is:

Is it a spare set for 2 other morning services, so, if a set is not available for the other 2 "not to be canxed" services, then it is "allocated" to run that instead

Yet again, it was cancelled this morning.

So that's 4 out of 5 times this week, without checking on Tuesday.

Save the Train was the campaign to bring an approriate train service back to and through Melksham.

Most big contributors are still around writing at the Coffee shop forum where new members are very welcome.

The train has been saved - sort of - we have stepped back up from an unusable service to a poorish one but it's doing very well. We did that through setting up the TransWilts Community Rail Partnership. That fulfilled its early objectives; it has been taken over by local and regional government types who are now doing medium and long term work. The team from this forun can also be found at the Melksham Rail User Group (which was the Melksham Rail Development Group at the time these articles were written and we had no users.

We mustn't loose sight, though, that the train service remains poor and needs our community support in marketing and campaigning to keep it going in a positive direction ... and all the more so when we're expecting to find a different normallity once we get out of the Coronavirus Pandemic and head for zero carbon via the climate crisis. Yes, it's saved ... it's now a key community facility ... the need for enhancement and the strong and near-universal local support remain, and the rail industry and goverment remain slow to move and provide the enhancements even to level us up with other towns. Please support the Melksham Rail User Group - now very much in partnership rather than protest with the rail industry and local government, including GWR, TransWilts and unitary and town councils. And please use the trains and buses, and cycle and walk when you can.
