06.47 Frome - Cardiff - 1478/4037
Written by Ruthg on Thursday, 22nd February 2007

Was anyone at Westbury station this morning 22/2/07, who can tell me if the usual 06.47 from Frome to Cardiff started at Westbury rather than Frome. It was cancelled from Frome and it was delayed by 15 minutes on Tuesday morning as it was on Tuesday 13th. It means we have to get the slow running 06.52 from Weymouth which hangs around everywhere and as a consequence my 1 hr journey to Swindon becomes 1hr and 50 minutes  because I miss the connection at Westbury and one at Bath Spa as well.

I want an answer from FGW as to why it ran from Westbury rather than Frome, so I'd be grateful if anyone knows if it did, or how I can find out.

Thanks

FGW's customer services do a fairly efficicient job it giving you an official reason for delays / cancellations / short runnings, and it IS worth asking as the number of complaints / issues / passenger concerns does - I think - get noticed.  Getting at the absolute truth is another matter - there are times that I think that things like "mechical failure" can be a technically correct - but it can mean "late off depot so turned train around short of destination".  Thus a Westbury start ...

A very speedy reply to my letter from FGW, but it doesn't quite answer my question in full, as to why  it was late two Tuesdays in a row.

"Thank you for your letter of 21 February 2007 regarding your journey from Frome to Swindon on 20 February 2007...Unfortunately the train was running late due to empty coaching stock, and was 10 minutes late leaving depot..."

Not entirely sure this is the right thread to post, but your comment Graham reminded me of an explanation from on-train staff last week on a Cardiff/Portsmouth run why it was a single 158, that there wasn't a driver available to attach the additional set to make it 4 coaches. FGW still sailing very close to the wind with all resources not just stock.

Can't find the thread where staff shortages was mentioned to be able to post the link.

the Driver from the set being driven in can couple them up, all he needs is someone to help him do the brake test with!

Save the Train was the campaign to bring an approriate train service back to and through Melksham.

Most big contributors are still around writing at the Coffee shop forum where new members are very welcome.

The train has been saved - sort of - we have stepped back up from an unusable service to a poorish one but it's doing very well. We did that through setting up the TransWilts Community Rail Partnership. That fulfilled its early objectives; it has been taken over by local and regional government types who are now doing medium and long term work. The team from this forun can also be found at the Melksham Rail User Group (which was the Melksham Rail Development Group at the time these articles were written and we had no users.

We mustn't loose sight, though, that the train service remains poor and needs our community support in marketing and campaigning to keep it going in a positive direction ... and all the more so when we're expecting to find a different normallity once we get out of the Coronavirus Pandemic and head for zero carbon via the climate crisis. Yes, it's saved ... it's now a key community facility ... the need for enhancement and the strong and near-universal local support remain, and the rail industry and goverment remain slow to move and provide the enhancements even to level us up with other towns. Please support the Melksham Rail User Group - now very much in partnership rather than protest with the rail industry and local government, including GWR, TransWilts and unitary and town councils. And please use the trains and buses, and cycle and walk when you can.
